چکیده

This paper develops a simple but general methodology to estimate the expected intertemporal marginal rate of substitution or “EMRS”, using only data on asset prices and returns. Our empirical strategy is general, and allows the EMRS to vary arbitrarily over time. A novel feature of our technique is that it relies upon exploiting idiosyncratic risk, since theory dictates that idiosyncratic shocks earn the EMRS. We apply our methodology to two different data sets: monthly data from 1994 through 2003, and daily data for 2003. Both data sets include assets from three different markets: the New York Stock Exchange, the NASDAQ, and the Toronto Stock Exchange. For both monthly and daily frequencies, we find plausible estimates of EMRS with considerable precision and time-series volatility. We then use these estimates to test for asset integration, both within and between stock markets. We find that all three markets seem to be internally integrated in the sense that different assets traded on a given market share the same EMRS. The technique is also powerful enough to reject integration between the three stock markets, and between stock and money markets. JEL Classification Numbers: G14

Hedonic Pricing under Uncertainty: A Theoretical Consumer Behavior Model

A model of consumer behavior has been formulated by using an additive utility function and the hedonic pricing approach, in a virtual market. Since, there is a time lag between ordering and purchasing products (goods and services) online and receiving them, it means the consumer makes decision under uncertainty. The level of satisfaction with products with distinctive characteristics is describ...

The Evaluation of Systemic Risk in the Iran Banking System by Marginal Expected Shortfall (MES) Criterion

Today, Systemic Risk is being analyzed as one of the major issues in financial institutions. Banks are one of the institutions that can be linked to systemic risk based on global experience. Therefore, in the study, we evaluate the systemic risk in the banking system of the country via the marginal expected shortfall (MES) criterion. For the purpose of the present study, 17 banks listed on the ...

A Method for Calculating the Marginal Rate in the FDH Model

Trade-off reviews the rate of marginal substitution of inputs and outputs onto the efficient frontier. On the other hand, marginal rates of substitution (MRS) are important quantities for analysts and managers. In this paper, by changing the method of Asmild (2004), an algorithm is found that it can be used to calculate the marginal rate of the free disposal hull (FDH) model.
